“A Different World Is Back—and HBCU Leaders Say the New Hillman Reflects Today’s Reality”

The new Netflix version of A Different World is generating attention beyond entertainment. An October 27 Inside Higher Ed feature examines how the series portrays issues currently affecting HBCUs, including funding pressures, campus safety, immigration concerns, identity, and student life—while retaining the Black joy and community that made the original culturally significant.

The production itself also has meaningful HBCU ties: it was filmed at Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University, and HBCU students and alumni were substantially involved as performers, production staff, and storyline consultants. Netflix says the series centers the richness and complexity of Black campus life.
