Preliminary data shows that nearly 2,500 fewer students are enrolled in Philadelphia district and district-run alternative schools this year than last year. The decline is the largest year-over-year drop in five years, according to Chalkbeat’s analysis of the district’s October enrollment snapshot.

The reasons for the decline are not yet clear. Philadelphia families can choose among district schools, brick-and-mortar charter schools, cyber charters and private schools. The city’s declining birth rate may also contribute, but available data does not show exactly where students who left district schools have gone.

The enrollment shift raises questions about how the district will plan staffing, school programs and budgets. Funding implications depend on state rules and how enrollment changes across different types of schools. District officials say they are canvassing neighborhoods and working with community partners to connect with children who are not attending school.

The district’s enrollment picture comes as Philadelphia prepares to close 17 schools beginning next year. Following the trend over time will help families and educators understand how enrollment changes may affect schools and the resources available to students.
